Biography

With a strong classical guitar technique and a remarkable gift for improvisation, Jeff Linsky has developed his own warmly passionate and personal style of playing, blending elements of jazz, classical, and Latin music.

A native of Southern California, Jeff began playing the guitar at the age of ten. Although primarily a self-taught musician, he did study briefly with both Spanish guitar virtuoso Vicente Gomes and jazz great Joe Pass. By the age of seventeen, Jeff was already touring the United States playing large concert venues with pop groups. However, it was his interest in other styles of music and his sense of adventure that led him to travel the world as a solo guitarist.

After appearing on several recordings for other artists, Jeff Linsky’s own recording career began in the late 1970’s. The award-winning composer now has several critically acclaimed recordings to his credit. Jeff's original composition, Up Late, from the Concord Records release of the same name, has become a standard in the Smooth Jazz radio format. His lively composition, Monterey, served for years as the broadcast theme of the Monterey Jazz Festival. Jeff’s Latin Jazz project, Simpatico, featuring Weather Report veterans Alphonso Johnson and Alex Acuna, was nominated Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. The completely improvised solo guitar release, Jeff Linsky/Solo, was selected to Downbeat Magazine's Top Ten List. Jeff’s guitar is still featured on recordings by other artists, as well. His association with pianist Kevin Kern has led to Best-Selling recordings for Real Music.

Besides his numerous recordings, Jeff's playing can also be enjoyed on the "Artist Series" video from Mel Bay Publications, Jeff Linsky/Latin Guitar Jazz, where Jeff is featured in a 45 minute in-studio concert with noted percussionist Michael Spiro. Mel Bay has recently released the video on DVD to accompany the new music folio, Jeff Linsky/Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Solos. In respect for Jeff’s Latin Jazz recordings and compositions, he has been named an “Honorary Hispanic” by Latin Beat Magazine.

Jeff continues to maintain an active recording and international concert career, performing both as a soloist and with his various ensembles. His music, as both a composer and an artist, is heard around the world, from radio airplay to television specials. Jeff’s trademark "requinto" (a three-quarter size Spanish guitar) is available as the "Jeff Linsky Model Requinto" from Asturias Guitar Workshops in Kobe, Japan.
